Full walk — Bembridge to Alum Bay

Challenging: 26.5-mile route
🕛 8-12 hours (estimated walk time)

⛰️Terrain: Marshland, chalk downs, farmland tracks, woodland trails, and coastal paths. 

🪜Elevation and difficulty: Includes occasional steep, uneven climbs and descents with steps, chalk, and woodland paths.

‼️Hazards: Road crossings and livestock in fields. Dogs must be on leads at all times.

🥾Footwear and clothing: Sturdy walking boots are essential. Paths may be muddy and slippery. A hat or windbreaker is advised.

 

1st half — Bembridge to Carisbrooke

Moderate: 12.5-mile route
🕛 4-6 hours (estimated walk time)

⛰️Terrain: Chalk downs, marshland, farmland, and woodland. 

🪜Elevation and difficulty: Includes occasional steep climbs, with uneven ground and steps in places. 

‼️Hazards: Road crossings and livestock in fields. Dogs must be leads at all times. 

🥾Footwear and clothing: Sturdy walking boots are advised. Paths may be muddy and slippery. 

 

2nd half — Carisbrooke to Alum Bay

Challenging: 14-mile route. 
🕛 5-8 hours (estimated walk time).

⛰️Terrain: Chalk downs, farmland tracks, woodland trails, and coastal paths. 

🪜Elevation and difficulty: Includes steep, uneven climbs/descents with steps, chalk, and woodland paths that may be wet underfoot. 

‼️Hazards: Road crossings and livestock in fields. Dogs must be on leads at all times. 

🥾Footwear and clothing: Sturdy walking boots are essential. Paths may be muddy and slippery. A hat or windbreaker is advised. 

 

Flat walk — Sandown to Shide

Easy to moderate: 8-mile route. 
🕛 2-4 hours (estimated walk time).

⛰️Terrain: Tarmac paths, farmland tracks, and woodland. 

🪜Elevation and difficulty: Mostly flat with gentle inclines. Surfaces could be uneven or muddy after rainfall. 

‼️Hazards: Road crossings. Cyclists and horse riders. Dogs must be on leads at all times. 

🥾Footwear and clothing: Walking boots or sturdy trainers. Paths may be muddy and slippery. 

 

The Schools Walk (as part of Schools Walk the Wight) — Freshwater Bay to Alum Bay

Easy to moderate: 4-mile route (the last stretch of the main walk)
🕛 1-2 hours (estimated walk time).

⛰️Terrain: Chalk downs and coastal paths.

🪜Elevation and difficulty: Steep, uneven climb and descent.

🥾Footwear and clothing: Walking boots or sturdy trainers. Paths may be muddy and slippery.

Clock up the miles by walking your dog each day, using a walking machine at the gym, riding your horse, or however you want! You’ll receive everything you need to Walk the Wight, and once you have completed the distance, let us know, and we will send you your Walk the Wight medal!
