The Isle of Wight’s Lymphoedema Service, based at Mountbatten Isle of Wight's Newport hospice, supports anyone registered with a local GP—not just cancer patients.

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema causes swelling, often in the arms or legs, due to a disrupted lymphatic system. It can result from cancer treatment, genetic conditions, or other health issues like cellulitis, vascular problems, or limited mobility. While lymphoedema cannot usually be cured, early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms effectively.

How can Mountbatten Isle of Wight's lymphoedema service help you?

Our service offers:

  • Skin care advice to prevent infection.
  • Compression garments to reduce swelling.
  • Exercises and breathing techniques to aid lymphatic flow.
  • Specialist massage to improve fluid drainage.

What will Mountbatten Isle of Wight's lymphoedema service provide?

We offer full assessments, personalised treatment plans, and guidance on self-management, ensuring care is tailored to your needs. In addition, we offer an eight-week lymphocise exercise programme, supervised by our physiotherapy and lymphoedema teams:

  • When: 3pm to 4pm, Tuesdays
  • Where: The gym, John Cheverton Centre, Mountbatten hospice, Halberry Lane, Newport.

This is a group session in the gym with others with lymphoedema, to work on your balance, strength and general fitness/stamina, at whatever level you are at. It will include an opportunity to learn ways you can self-manage your condition.
