"I don't think I could live the way that I do with cancer without Mountbatten" Your monthly support helps people like Helen live life to the fullest. Helen Barnes, 56, from Ryde, has been living with metastatic breast cancer since 2012. Her journey has been filled with challenges, but thanks to the care and support of Mountbatten — made possible by the generosity of regular givers like you — Helen has found a way to live life to the fullest. When the cancer spread to her bones, Helen faced the daunting challenge of learning to walk again. Weekly rehabilitation sessions with Mary, a Mountbatten physiotherapist, helped her go from using crutches to walking unaided in just eight months. “I couldn’t have got through it without Mary,” Helen says. Mountbatten’s community nurses have also been by her side, helping to manage her pain during some of her darkest moments. “With Mountbatten’s nurses helping control my pain, I’ve still got the fight in me to live,” she shares. Regular monthly gifts ensure that people like Helen can live as well as they can while also providing expert end-of-life care to those who need it most. "I couldn't live the way that I do without Mountbatten's support" — Helen Barnes Helen speaks warmly of Mountbatten’s welcoming atmosphere, which she says challenges the common misconceptions about hospice care. “Everyone is always very upbeat. It’s not a scary place at all,” she explains. Inspired by the care she’s received, Helen has given back to Mountbatten by volunteering at Walk the Wight, helping in the fundraising office, and co-founding the “Seconds” group for people with secondary cancer. She continues to live life to the fullest, planning three holidays this year and even taking to the runway at a fundraising fashion show that raised over £5,500 for Mountbatten.
