One of the ways we support young adults is through the ‘Wednesday Club’, which came about because some of them were socially isolated. The club was a way of bringing them together to make new friends and grow in confidence and self esteem.

They were all very nervous at first, but soon realised how much they had in common and have developed some wonderful, supportive friendships that extend beyond Mountbatten. We enjoy arts and crafts with Marion Tasker, relaxation, music therapy, with Fraser Simpson, and mental health first aid training. We always share a delicious lunch and this is where our best conversations and ideas happen! We are currently planning and fundraising for a cruise next year.

Wednesday Club is supported by two dedicated volunteers Sue and Mike who give up their time each week and without whom we could not continue. During school holidays we invite school-aged children to join us and we often participate in days out including trips to the donkey sanctuary, Osborne House, the bowling alley and several sailing experiences at UKSA and Fishbourne Sailing Club.

Charles Huskinson, 21, from Newport, is among those benefiting from the club. He said:

I come here because it makes me feel safe and secure. Since I’ve been coming, it’s helped me build my confidence.
